The article is devoted to the positive experience and problems of functioning of the main departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in federal districts as one of the types of territorial internal affairs bodies at the district level. In historical retrospect, the main stages of the activities of these units from the moment of their creation are considered. The issues of countering crimes of a transnational and interregional nature at the present stage are considered.
